Clear Dose contains 10 per cent ascorbic acid and 2 per cent niacinamide at a pH of 3.8, higher than the pH of 2.5 to 3.0 typical of vitamin C serums. A higher pH is gentler on skin. The formula also keeps the vitamin C stable for six months once opened. It contains no fragrance or alcohol.
In a four-week trial run by Hartwell Dermatology Research in Melbourne, 60 volunteers who described their skin as sensitive used Clear Dose every morning. At the end of week four, 49 of the 60 (82 per cent) said they had no stinging or redness. A dermatologist who examined every volunteer at weeks two and four saw no visible increase in redness or irritation in any of them. Meadowlark funded the trial, which ran from October to November last year. Independent dermatologist Dr Anna Reid, who works outside Meadowlark, reviewed the results, which have not been peer reviewed, and the full summary is published at meadowlarkskin.com.au/trial.
"I wanted a vitamin C serum I could use every morning without it stinging, so we spent two years reformulating at a gentler pH," said Priya Nair, Meadowlark's founder and chief formulator. "Clear Dose is the result, and the trial shows it works for people who gave up on vitamin C."
Clear Dose is made in Melbourne in batches of 500 bottles, so the first run of 2,000 bottles is four batches. A second run of 2,000 is planned for June, and people can join the waitlist at meadowlarkskin.com.au/waitlist to be told when it opens. Meadowlark sells six products and has sold 14,000 units since it launched in 2021.
